Autumn Family Photography near Reading

Family, Family Adventures

Autumn family photography runs from September to November and is my absolute favourite time to shoot. Hedgerows full of berries, colourful changing leaves and soft low light makes autumn one of the most interesting times of the year. Although I’m always sad to say goodbye to summer I can’t help but get excited digging out my chunky knits and wellies for my autumn photoshoots.

I always plan my photoshoots two hours before sunset to take advantage of golden hour. Or what some photographers like to call ‘magic hour’. This is when the sun is low in the sky and the light turns warm and soft making everyone and everything look it’s best. From the end of September golden hour quickly drops from 5:30pm to 3:30pm in October. And by the end of November golden hour starts at 2:30pm. This makes it a great time of the year for little ones when you still want that beautiful light but bedtime routines need to be stuck to!

Something else to consider at this time of the year is the great British weather. Torrential downpours are not uncommon so I’m always happy to be flexible on dates when it comes to autumn family photography. Apart from a bit of rain it can get cold. And this leads me nicely onto what to wear…

I always provide a detailed guide on what to wear but I have a few golden rules:

  • Don’t forget layers. I’m talking jumpers, cardigans, coats, hats, scarves and gloves. If it’s warm we can always take them off but the worse thing is for little ones to get cold and grumpy. And don’t forget footwear, it can make such a difference to your photos. Check out the gorgeous brown and blue boots the kids are wearing in the photos below. And for more outfit ideas check out my autumn outfit Pinterest board.
  • Think about colours. You can never go wrong with a neutral colour palette. However when you think about the environment, orange is a good base colour to start. The complementary colour to orange on the colour wheel is blue and this contrast helps make your images pop. The family below absolutely nailed the brief when it comes to what to wear on an autumn family photoshoot.

So with a little extra planning autumn family photography can be magical. Take a look at the below autumn photoshoot for ideas on what to wear and then get in touch if you would like to book in a photoshoot with me.
