Wargrave Chalk Pit 1.5 Mile Walk

Berkshire Walks

Did anyone else know there was a chalk pit in the middle of Wargrave and that Berkshire was underwater 85 million years ago? Nope not me!

After getting a tip off by the lovely owner of Totes Emosh we packed a picnic and went to explore the former quarry. The chalk pit has some of the youngest chalk preserved in Berkshire and is full of fossils. If you’re lucky, you may find sea urchins, oysters and corals in the debris at the bottom of the chalk face.

It takes about 15 minutes to walk the loop. But we spent lot’s of time writing our names on tree stumps with the fallen chalk and building a den. As well as the chalkface there’s also a pond to explore. Local volunteers are working hard to clear the overgrown bushes and improve the paths. And they’ve done a great job. However, there is still lot’s of nettles so you may want to wear long trousers!

For parking we found it easiest to park up on Braybrooke road and walk down to the chalk pit from there.

Oh and the best bit… The George and Dragon pub is only a 4 minute drive away! It’s located on the pretty banks of the River Thames with it’s own courtyard and garden. The perfect place to refuel after your walk.

Chalk pits to visit in Berkshire

Wargrave chalk pit is one of 27 geological sites in Berkshire which the Berkshire Geoconservation Group is helping to protect for future generations. I’d love to know if you’ve visited any of these sites and which one you recommend we head to next.

Keep an eye out for more photo walks around Berkshire on my blog or follow #PhotoWalksBerkshire on Instagram. Next up on my places to visit is Loddon Nature Reserve in Twyford!
